2008 marks the 5th year that students
from Norwich High and Teachers'
Memorial collaborated with Meiklem
Kiln Works to create 150 soup bowls to
be sold at an annual event to raise
money for the Norwich Soup Kitchen.

The Empty Bowls project begins for the
students at Meiklem Kiln Works in
January of each year. Lyndsay and
her students throw 150 bowls, trim and
bisque fire them. The high school and
middle school youth then visit the
studio and learn the process of
glazing, and decorate the 150 bowls!
Students learn about the firing process during the
glazing day at MKW.
In 2007 we
raised over
$1,500 to
benefit St.
Vincent de Paul
Soup Kitchen,
Norwich. Help
us raise even
more in 2008!

be available at the 2008 event!
Teachers' Memorial Middle
School students serve the soup
at the 2007 Empty bowls Event.
Students learn various methods of glazing and
then dip, paint and drip the glaze onto the
bowls. Below: Students are careful to remove
excess glaze from the bottom of the bowls so
they do not fuse to the shelves inside the kiln
during firing.
Above: Glazed bowls are dull and chalky in color.
They will gain their vibrant shine from the radiant
heat in the kiln which fires up to nearly 2200
degrees!
